I really appreciate this thread and I recommend it to all. One thing that jumps out at me is the notion that different people are looking for different things in social media.
Personally, I'm converging to first and foremost wanting a highSNR experience. I want to be able to ask others what they think about X or where to learn more about it; I want to read others asking and answering similar questions. That's what I'm getting so much more from Mastodon than any other platform (including BlueSky).
I don't fault anyone for wanting to post pictures of their cats and see other peoples cats and whatnot. Or their vacation or lunch (... me ducking here). I have all these types of things in my life and I cherish them. It's just not what I'm personally on social media to share or see (for me that's the N in SNR).
Some people call Mastodon "siloed" and I don't think that's quite right. What I love about Mastodon is that I am having highSNR conversations with a lot of different types (not just other brain researchers and not just about brains). It is true that the experience here leans less toward focusing on very important problems that need to be solved. I also recognize that the experience here for marginalized communities has not been pleasant (and I really hate that). What I would love most is a platform in which we can have balanced, highSNR conversations in an egalitarian way were individuals of all ranks and types feel supported to chime in.
The one thing Mastodon is currently missing for me is something akin to the "news". People are shy to post their latest papers/accomplishments and it's difficult to see what research/etc the field is buzzing about. That is more enriched on other platforms currently (including BlueSky).
