One thing you should always remember (my two cents). If you trust and protect your integrity with your whole entire life then no one can take it away from you. No one. You hold control over your integrity. You can hate yourself for many things, but even in doing that, you hold YOUR integrity.
The place where so many become misguided is in putting anything above this one tenet. Something you’re born with. Something you should be able to die with as long as you guard it with your life.
I know that sounds extreme. But it’s something I read as a child and never forgot. Your integrity and honesty is the biggest gift to the world. I have lost so much in honoring my integrity, I have travelled the world with my integrity. It’s my clean slate, my ticket to being able to live with myself despite my flaws. Never convoluting the truth even if it hurts, because it is my one way of knowing I can trust myself.
Protect your integrity. Don’t let a single setback mean that you do not hold it deep in your heart. It just makes stuff tolerable. I speak from experience of being very embarrassed by who I am sometimes but choosing to be myself anyway. I am allowed to say it as it is.
As long as you do this as your first priority, you cannot screw anyone, most importantly yourself, over. You will be able to take your mistakes, and those of others, as stepping stones. You have to be able to be real with yourself and the world.
When you act without integrity, you might think you’re doing someone wrong. No, you’re doing yourself wrong above all else.
You will always bounce back. Your integrity is your life.
