While most modern fascism certainly has echoes and threads that date back to historical fascism, it's important to realize that fascism is basically like Dr. Who's "cybermen", just a really bad thing that keeps being reinvented independently over and over again. It's an easy thing for people to fall into, an anti-pattern pit trap that people keep building. Like how societies keep inventing spindle whorls, except instead of being useful, it's just social damage.
