Welp, it seems the problem is with the water line that feeds the fridge. There's a copper line running from the kitchen sink to where the fridge is, but it runs under the floor and not above the stove or near the cabinet with the mildew smell.
I had completely forgotten about this water source. The leak is at the end of the line, where it connects to the plastic hose that feeds the fridge, and it's a drip that has been pooling behind the fridge, against the wall.
This water has been absorbed by the wall, and for some reason the symptom was in a cabinet that is not directly above the fridge and not noticeable anywhere else (not around the fridge, or above it.
I wish it had been clearer where things were coming from. We now have some bulging drywall in the back side of the wall.
I shut down the line that runs to the fridge and I'll have to get someone in to come fix all this, which won't be cheap.
Fun times!
