I fear cherry-picking, but hope for transparency. I will be dissapointed.
Having seen 40 years of change in the NHS before I retired about 12 years ago I can guarantee that any changes on the basis of consultation will be resisted, and will take a long time to implement.
I don't sense that there is the goodwill among staff today that previous wholesale changes had. Staff today don't feel - to me as an outsider now - empowered in the way I did many years ago. They are trudging along to the next pay day.
That's not to say there aren't good, committed people doing a great job - most are, in all fields, but they are ground down by over work, and under-investment.
Over the decades the NHS has become increasingly centralised - despite the move to PCTs and then ICTs - the direction of travel comes from Whitehall. While I wouldn't suggest a full blown return to the pre-1974 model, there was a lot to commend it.
