My uncle sobered up but went from a professional to almost unemployable.
He worked as a janitor for the latter half of his life and lived in a shitty rundown trailer that I think a friend cut him a discount on out of pity.
No one came to the funeral. One friend couldn't handle it. One was out of town. One was in jail.
That's all he had--three friends.
So my dad and I buried him after a service that no one came to.
But I still see it as a redemption story. He died sober and with his integrity intact.

But by then his liver was FUBAR'd and the doctors told him it was just a matter of time. His quality of life deteriorated pretty hard over time and he didn't even make it to his 60's. Severe liver cancer.
