My spicy take on the MTV disappearing all of its web archives is this is the obvious outcome of allowing major corporations to treat their information outputs as business assets. Some of y'all have never worked as archivists who've written retention schedules that you have to argue with an institution's attorneys about. I did, for nearly a decade. I have worked with staff attorneys who are extremely skeptical about the virtues of institutional archives because it's viewed as a legal liability.
