Even women put women last: Lucretia Mott’s fight against slavery hit a roadblock in 1840, selected as Pennsylvania delegates to the World Anti-Slavery Convention in London, where male abolitionists refused to let female delegates into the convention, deeming it was not their place to participate.
Mott – along with fellow abolitionist Elizabeth Cady Stanton who had also come as a delegate – vowed to work together to establish a meeting for women’s rights once they returned to the States.
