And they observe, learn from and remember every damn thing you do. 14 years later my daughter said that when I'm in the bedroom and she needs me that she comes to the door and says name quietly and waits for an answer. Apparently 14 years ago she knocked on the door and I opened it angrily or something. The lesson she's carried with her since she was 5 is to never knock on my bedroom door.

Jesus Christ that's terrible and I'm completely to blame for her decade of stress, it's so ingrained in her that now at 19 when she's home from college for the weekend she still won't knock on my bedroom door! She just told me this LAST NIGHT!

We never spanked our kids and always tried to negotiate, explain, engage and be completely empathetic with them but still, one event from 14 years ago changed my daughter's behavior as a grown ass adult. Imagine all the other "inconsequential" things we did that modified how our kids see and interact with the world!
