aerc has the concept of filters (https://git.sr.ht/~rjarry/aerc/tree/master/item/doc/aerc-config.5.scd#L986) which may not be as different from mutt in that they rely on external non-interactive sw.
But I would certainly recommend you give it a try, I can’t do my work without reading the occasional html mail, and the filters work for me.
