Well, I went to elementary school in the 2000's, and we learned about Johnny. For whatever reason, the story made a big enough impact on me that I named my first pet, a guinea pig, after him.
But, I don't know if he's talked about now. I get your point, but even if they still talked about him, my point is that as far as characters go, he planted apple trees. That's it. It's silly and purposeless. People like Kit Carson would form the basis of a stronger national myth for the US, but they've torn down all of his monuments already. For that matter, how many people ever even heard his name?
