Does it really break network effect? Having people pay for relays to escape the cesspool of “the commons” seems like a reasonable option right now, but we’re still just seconds after the Big Bang.
I think, as things start to coalesce, large relays will start charging more for access to their larger networks, creating the mind” for users via sunk cost.
Moderation is still a dirty word for now, but it’s coming (probably forced on the mobile Apps, the web could remain unencumbered) and it’s going to be just as capricious as Mastodon instances (that’s just how people are).
The threat of losing access to your “audience” on a large paid relay is a recipe for making people toe the line.
