I have no doubt but that Gauss was aware, not just of Moebius strips, but of this result as well. 🙂
I mean, Gauss was aware of seemingly all of 19th century maths before other mathematicians.
Probably some 20th century too, short of the answers to Hilbert's problems / Goedel / Church / Turing. I think. I'm pretty sure he didn't...well, who knows. He was as seemingly impossible as Fermat and Ramanujan, but broader in topics.
