Tiradentes was named in honor of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, better known as Tiradentes. He was one of the leaders of a movement that sought Brazil’s independence from the Portuguese Crown at the end of the 18th century. The main motivation behind the movement was dissatisfaction with the high taxes imposed by the metropolis, especially the “quinto,” which required 20% of all gold production from the colony.
