Academia is not the ivory tower it used to be, thankfully, we are now very visible and have embraced media skills to communicate our results but academic expertise is also not as well-defended as that ivory tower once was. People have started to believe the research it does is no different, or even no better, than that which happens outside the academe - those other 'experts' on TV.
