They would also do things like everyone would decide to knock off for half the day to go fishing, or someone's wife would have brought food for all his coworkers, leading to other people calling their own family to bring food as well-- kind of an impromptu festival.
It's not a bad way to live, if I'm being honest, but the point is you can't extract the kind of industrial value from them that you can from the chinese. Or from the northern europeans of that era.
