scaring my husband by telling him that saturn devouring his son is the name we gave the painting but actually we don't know goya's specific reason for painting it or his interpretation of the work. it was part of his "black paintings" which were a collection of darker, unsettling works painted on the walls of his home in the latter years of his life, saturn being one of the works in his dining room. it is popularly considered to be an interpretation of the saturn myth but that was applied to the work after goya's death
