Given the comments I'm getting (both public and private), I'm clearly not alone here. I think this points to an unfortunate artifact of FOSS tools: when they don't meet users' needs, it can easily go undetected.
Note that this doesn't make proprietary software better! I'm just saying that the user feedback loop is much stronger for proprietary software and FOSS could learn from this.
