And I am particularly dismayed by the lesson that my country clearly took from its inexcusable history:

Apparently what we learned is that it's reasonable to stand back while a weak and marginalized group is treated unacceptably at a mass scale, and with racist disregard for their humanity.

Especially when the personal cost of speaking up is inconvenient, and there is no real cost to watching that group be mistreated at an inconceivable level.
