When I cut my one dimensional tomato, the first cut divides it in two. The second cut takes one of the pieces and divides that in two as well. So, 1 cut, 2 pieces, 2 cuts, 3 pieces and so on. If we want to be mathematical we say that n cuts give us n+1 pieces. Now, if we move on to a flat disk of tomato, it has room for two sets of cuts. We can cut one way, turn it 90 degrees and make a second set of cuts. If I make two sets of two cuts I end up with nine pieces! 4/x
