My experience knowing someone with a DSD:
When he was born, his parents and doctors were unsure of his sex. Being born in modern times in the U.S., presumably they found out quickly enough. He had a lot of distress over his body growing up, but went through a male puberty, grew tall with broad shoulders, strong body, deep voice, and male pattern baldness. Even got his girlfriend pregnant.
He's very much a man, but his maleness was not apparent at birth. Had he been born in different circumstances, he may have been incorrectly sexed and "raised as a girl".
