It is also one of the most beautiful castles in the world.\nhttps://image.nostr.build/6448f8cd0c6e234e9244133a75ae776deca61506e8e7706396bfa4f5e17fd1a9.jpg\nIts area consists mostly of a large plateau some 100 metres above sea level, up to 300 m wide and 1 km long, the site of a powerful medieval fortress. The town walls and many Byzantine churches remain from the medieval period. iIt is built in a rock which is a connected with a narrow and unique road to the mainland. Thus, it had always been well protected from the raids of the barbarians. Monemvasis means \"One Way\" in Greek.\n\nThe town and fortress were founded in 583, during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Mauricious, by people seeking refuge from the Slavic and the Avaric invasion of Greece. \nFrom the 10th century AD, the town developed into an important trade and maritime centre. \n\nThe fortress withstood the Arab and Norman invasions in 1147; William II of Villehardouin took it in 1248, on honourable terms, after three years of siege; in 1259 William was captured by the Greeks and in 1262 it was retroceded to Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos (Παλαιολόγος) as part of William's ransom. It remained part of the Byzantine Empire until 1460, becoming the seat of an imperial governor, a landing place for Byzantine operations against the Franks. \nhttps://image.nostr.build/75e2a1fd160bd83e63a4cb8a6c978d150ea9a47feb98281665ee7d6f2f70088c.jpg\nAbout 1401, the historian George Sphrantzes (Σφραντζής) was born in the town. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453 Monemvasia held out against the threats of Sultan Mehmed II in 1458 and 1460, when it became the only remaining domain of the Despot of the Morea (Peloponnese) Thomas Palaiologos, claimant of the Imperial throne.\n\n Later on the town was fairly prosperous under Venetian rule until 1540 when Monemvasia was occupied by the Ottomans and then it was liberated from Ottoman rule on July 23, 1821 by the Greeks who entered the town during the Greek War of Independence.\n\nThe urban development of Monenbasia was determined by the terrain and the area available for building. Most of the houses are to the south of the main market road in the Lower City, where building is dense.
