When we look at the fediverse though, most projects start from a place where the protocol has very few technical restrictions on reading data. Sure you have to login to mastodon, but creating an account is trivial. There's no corporation to require a real email address or anything like that. Sure you can "block" people. But as soon as you dig into ActivityPub, you learn that federated instances will happily forward your data to anybody they please.
