I feel like the larger point in complaining about Google here never is specifically about maps, but more about the corp and the increasing difficulty for average folks to see alternatives, much less free their devices from a corporation that may decide to turn thought police at any time.

Switching map apps solves the problem of what the gulf is labeled as to being accurate. Switching to someone else ditches email ads. But it just feels like advertising the switch is a little missing the broader frustration in which most folks are fucked and utterly helpless when it comes to their devices, and as many technical folks as there are, there's still vastly more people who don't know someone technical enough to help with shifting to something like Graphene or fully separating.

It is a desk slam of frustration about how capitalism itself has gone so unchecked by spineless politicians as to end up with spineless corporations now, with delusions of running their own city-states while they bow down to someone who'd never grant them such power.

But sure, go off about how OSM saves us from the perils of seeing "Gulf of America". I'm sure that's a great help.
