Events is cool, but at the protocol level 'event' is being used to reference all kinds of relayed data. A like or other reaction is an event, as is an update to your metadata, sending an encrypted DM, or publishing a list of public keys that you're following.
Notes is more specific for type 1 events and some people have started using the term 'nosts' (combining post and nostr), which I kinda like but doesn't really roll off the tongue so well IMO.
