A solution to this must be client side, as having a relay attempt to filter all events with mentions is unrealistic. Someone suggested that clients could filter all mentions/replies by people that haven’t zapped you at least once. Or the already implemented option, to only show mentions from people you follow. Maybe clients could implement some kind of rate limiting. Relays could always just block the pesky npub, but creating new identities is free, so they’d be better off having a pay wall. There also is pow. Has a viable reputation system taken off yet? Clients could filter mentions based on npub reputation.
