One thing worth knowing is that each Digimon series (with a few exceptions, namely the sequels to Adventure and the godawful tacked on XW episodes after 54) is set in it's own universe, with the only main constant being that there is a Digital World and existence of Digimon.
While there are a few consistent tropes and "traditions", this is very loose and several serieses have subverted this. Case in point; each series has it's own backstory for this "digital world" and Digimon Tamers has it's own spin on it that you'll find cool I'm sure. More importantly, each piece of media has it's own spin on how humans interact with this.
In a way it's like Gundam where every series is disconnected with the last one.
