Teri Garr, the actress and singer who was Oscar-nominated for "Tootsie" and appeared in such varied movies as "Young Frankenstein" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," has died at age 79 after complications from multiple sclerosis.
She started her career as a dancer, appearing in six Elvis Presley features, becoming a regular on "The Sonny and Cher Show" and then landing a role in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation." Over her career, she worked with many of the directing greats.
A feminist to the core, she once explained to the A.V. Club why she was so often cast as the "long-suffering wife." “If there’s ever a woman who’s smart, funny, or witty, people are afraid of that, so they don’t write that," she said. "They only write parts for women where they let everything be steamrolled over them, where they let people wipe their feet all over them. Those are the kind of parts I play, and the kind of parts that there are for me in this world. In this life.”
