#WritersCoffeeClub Ch 3 Bonfire of the Profanities Nbr 1 — What's the single best writing advice you've heard or read?
Mostly I try not to read writing advice because it makes me nervous. But here are the three I live by.
Not attributed to Ray Bradbury, but told about him. When he started writing, he wrote a story a day, every day, for years, submitting them until he started selling. I've been practicing that with (hashtag)Writever for a month and mastering short short fiction. The only good stories are complete stories.
Pohl Anderson said at a convention panel to include the five sense in each descriptive paragraph. I do that in the second draft, where reasonable.
It's said about Tarantino that he always includes meal or drinking scenes because it makes people, even horrible people, relatable. It does. I write dinners and breakfasts, even show cooking, giving recipes. Really, anything mundane you do IRL, in measured amounts, like trimming your nails and tramping out to the post office, works wonders (for me at least).
