Stop promoting Keet.io

  • Keet is not open source, which means you don’t know what they are doing with your data. If the Keet app is sending all your “private” messages, calls, meetings to some servers owned by Keet or Holepunch and then processing/selling your data, you won’t be able to tell.

  • Even if they open source it later, the keys you generated using the app before that could be compromised. And any communication you do in the future using those keys, which even if is end to end encrypted might be getting intercepted by Keet.

  • Keet is not interoperable. Even if Keet was not open source, I would have liked it a bit more if it was easily interoperable with some other application. The way Hypercore and the other related tech from Holepunch works is that it allows you to create app that doesn’t need to roll out its own backend infrastructure, and the client side app itself works like a protocol of its own. For someone else to be able to create an app that is interoperable with an existing Hypercore app, you would need to know how exactly they have implemented their own stuff. Keet doesn’t provide any documentation for that.

  • People like Guy Swann that I generally very respect, have repeatably talked about how great Keet is, even when it goes against all the ethos of FOSS. Nothing is wrong with promoting Hypercore or the other open source libraries that Keet claims to use underneath, but you should think twice before promoting any product that is made using them.

  • Keet was supposed to be open sourced years ago. They have been talking doing it soon for quite some time now on Twitter. All these things has lead to Keet being perceived by non-technical Bitcoiners as being a legitimately good solution to private, peer to peer, decentralised communication. Will you accept responsibility if their “private” data gets leaked and that ends up putting them in jail or worse, leads to them getting robbed/killed?
