You seem to be confusing this with the idea of life expectancy, which is an aggregate statistic describing the average expected lifespan of a person at birth.

Also, you seem to be confusing that with the idea of a population's age distribution. They are completely different things.

There were plenty of people in their 60s and even 80s. It's just that a massive # of people died in infancy, so the abstract average statistic trends lower.
