They lied about the efficiency - it was never about that. LEDs didn't become widely available until they could cheaply make blue light - that was the thing holding them back from mass adoption. Except nobody ever wanted blue light, and we definitely don't need it. Blue light is harmful to us. So why did they need blue light to be good enough for mass market?
Because harming us is the point.
