One of the most chilling things I’ve ever heard a politician – let alone a Labour leader – say was that he preferred Davos to Westminster. He complained that Westminster is too full of talking and conflict (otherwise known as political debate), whereas he prefers to “gets things get done”. Those pesky voters putting the kibosh on the plans of those who know what’s best for us.
Starmer gets that the hastily rebuilt “Red Wall” is a house of cards which Labour cannot afford to knock over again. But he does not seem to like the people I am proud to come from.
He chose his tribe a long time ago and that tribe is unmistakably the metropolitan elite; “ordinary working people” are there to be controlled, corralled and counted in to the polling booth where, four years from now, they may well get their revenge – and, from the way things are going, their Reform. And then we’ll see what class war really looks like.
