#PennedPossibilities 469 — Is fear ever used in your WIP as a concept?
Not sure what is meant by "a concept" in respect to a story. I treat fear as one of the things a character may do, and I don't write horror, so it isn't ever something that is a constant in a story. Do my characters outright fear things? When you find yourself suddenly in the trailer of a truck without windows, you smell sulfur, and something large moves, apparently noticing your arrival—yes. When you wake up in a lightning storm, drenched, dragged by your hair by someone who's willing to bounce your head off a tree root to quiet you—yes. When you employer, for whom you're a bodyguard, reaches into her purse in the middle of a riot in [let's say, Brooklyn], and throws a grenade and you see someone die—yes. Adventure stories sometimes have moments. (All the same MC, btw.)
Things supernatural? Not in my stories. I kinda think of invoking the supernatural as cheating, but then I don't write horror or scary stories. Just real stories where bad things do happen.
