For funsies (and frankly because I wanted to know what would happen if, say, there were a brief power interruption) I unplugged my chest freezer while running, then plugged it right back in.
The kill-a-watt showed it pulled ~750 watts with the compressor locked. Normally it pulls 60-70.
After about 7 seconds, something clicked and the power draw dropped to zero. Then, three or so minutes later, another click and the compressor successfully started up.
So. That's what it does!
