Fahy had no intention of presenting an unbiased article on the topic, which became eminently clear once she started asking me questions about my personal life, such as whether I have children, whether I participated in sports in high school, and where I live. Of course, none of that should be relevant to whether I think it’s fair for boys to be allowed to compete on girls’ sports teams.

Finally, she pointed out that the boys (“trans female athletes,” to use her language) were minors (which is true), and wondered whether I was worried that protesting their inclusion in teams meant for female athletes constitutes “bullying.” Her tone could not have been more hostile or derisive, as she clearly viewed me as a mean old childless woman who never participated in high school athletics and who runs around the country “bullying” “trans kids.”

I spent some time having hope that the Times would come around. It has published a few pieces by Pamela Paul that defend feminists like J.K. Rowling and a few that question the safety of “gender affirming care.” I no longer have any hope for it. If it had any intention of doing right by the American people, it would have done so already.
