One of the easiest and most dependable things to grow, I've found, is runner beans. I grow them in tubs with bamboo canes sticking out, one cane per beanstalk. I plant the beans in the spring, keep them reasonably watered, and the only extra bit of work required is that when they get to a few inches tall, they have to be tied on to the canes so they'll learn to climb.
Other than that, it's just a matter of waiting until the back end of summer and then trying to figure out what you're going to do with this endless supply of beans.
