I still remember those jubilant days leading up to Barack Obama’s election in 2008. A Black man running for President of the United States, with a legit chance of winning? Surely, this was a new era. I didn’t deny the reality of racism in this country—hell, I experienced a lot first-hand—but I thought maybe that was finally fading away.
Of course, the subsequent years disproved that, and how! We’re still living with the backlash now.
