I was 14 when I started playing a role playing game called Traveller. One of the things you can do in it is the speculative buying and selling of trade goods, transported by your spaceship. When I did this, and business was good, I always put a lot of the profits into increasing my crew's salaries. This was despite the rules that made their salaries a fixed rate (for simplicity I assume). I also understood that it was contrary to standard business practice because it cut into *my* profits, but that didn't make sense to me because they were doing just as much work as me that helped get those profits in the first place (even though they were fictional people 😛).
