There are actually VERY good reasons why #socialmedia SHOULDN'T be funded by traditional advertising.
For starters, take a look at the dot com bubble collapse. It was, at heart, a collapse premised on an economic slowdown that made ad rates CRASH. LiveJournal survived it because it didn't rely on advertising, but rather provided a valuable service that people appreciated enough to contribute $$ for.
People tend not to contribute generously to ad-driven websites.
