One of my earliest memories: going to buy coconuts from the back of a truck. Taking coconuts to the market. Having the coconut uncle crack them open, scraping out the flesh, pressing it into a milk. My mother making a delicious Peranakan style curry.

She and I have such different food tastes from our family. We love strong flavors, and anything with coconut milk. Our Teochew family mostly likes steamed food. I like both, because of her.

I also miss fresh coconut milk.
