Given the number of books I edit for traditional publishers each year, clearly large numbers of people are getting contracts. Making a living from it is another story.
Nothing is assured in publishing, but perseverance tends to be as much a factor as luck. Some of us prefer not to persevere when we could self-publish in half the time and keep more of the profits. But it's a choice.
