How do you create characters who have depth?
I listen to them.
Whether writing a short story or a single scene, "depth" is often the biggest difference between drafting and polishing. I draft the character(s) into the scene and give them direction, then I get up and take a walk while rehashing that scene in my mind. This is the point where characters whisper things in my ear along the lines of, "I'd never say that" or "You know I'd make the stupid choice first."
