I can wholeheartedly recommend „Berlin – Portrait of a city“ by Taschen Verlag, a really extensive collection of photographs of every facet of life in Berlin from 1860 to ~2005.
Not a lot of text apart from the picture descriptions and an introduction to each „era“, but nonetheless an excellent overview.
Also comes quite handy if you want to press flowers or kill someone (it’s *huge*).
