When Zebulon Pike first spotted the mountain that white men would name after him, Pikes Peak, he noted in his journal that it appeared to be “a day’s hike“ away for his party. He made the same notation for the next 18 days.
His only previous mountain experience was with the Appalachians. And he could not comprehend a 14,000 foot high mountain.
He proclaimed it unclimbable. Today you can hike up it, drive up it, or take a train to the top.
And they still named it after him.
