I said yes, not wanting to be impolite. The employee training me later told me that I should always decline gifts of any size.

It was important enough for an intern to refuse a one dollar soda because even though I knew it wouldn't affect my work, avoiding even chance of appearing of bias was crucial. Government employees have a lot of power over the lives of the people they serve, and the judges of the highest court of the land should be held to the highest standard. It's infuriating that these judges just do not care
