Doing a battery recalibration charge.
The manual recommends fully charging the battery from a starting point below 10% every 3 to 6 months. It doesn't explicitly explain why, but it's pretty clear that this is to enable the battery management system to measure the current capacity of the battery and recalibrate the battery percentage and estimated range readouts accordingly.
Similarly the manual recommends that if the car is in regular (daily) use the battery should be fully charged at least once a week. It doesn't offer an explanation for this either, but for people familiar with lithium based batteries (e.g. Li-Po batteries from radio control aircraft) it's obvious that this is for cell balancing via the top balancing technique.
Both of these recommendations seem to assume you're doing a lot of driving and really hammering the battery as a result. If you don't do many kilometres per week (like us) both calibration and balancing could be done less frequently with no Ill effects. I have been doing calibration every 3 months but I generally wait until our battery is 40-50% before recharging, which means that our car is only fully charged (and rebalanced) once every few weeks, typically.
