I think too many writers aren't reading heavily in their own niches. They don't recognize that they've twisted a trope because they don't recognize the original.
My curmudgeonly opinion: If you don't know you're doing it, it's an accident, not skill.
That some accidents have positive outcomes - like chocolate in my peanut butter - even if you planned it, the only reason it works is that the *readers* recognize the original trope in the accidental twist.
