If, like me, you're somewhat uneasy about "direct messages" showing up in your regular home timeline looking like any other toot (and you use the desktop version of Masto), here's a small bit of CSS you can use with Stylus or Stylish that will set them apart visually.
Example image, one direct message versus one regular one. I did change the colors a bit from that link.
