For those of you that make the conscious choice to not be a nigger, enjoy some winter fresh greens
I'm not crazy about the mini hydro setups they sell for people to try to have urban herb gardens, because they usually advertise that they can support large plants when they just aren't built for it
What I have found is that they make awesome staging sites for transplant to Kratky method low effort hydroponic growth.
These things are designed for six plants but can only usually fit about three decent sized ones at a time. You can stagger their growth, though, and when they get big move them to quart or larger containers for Kratky method.
Kratky is extremely low effort if you're using larger containers. I've found for the small ones like 32 oz. Mason Jars you may need to give them another drink or two, but they'll produce big, healthy greens with a giant root system and lots of air roots.
In the middle of winter it's really nice to walk to your bookshelf or window, or wherever you have these guys set up and pick a fresh salad whenever you need it.
My old socks that I walked through the soles of make great light blockers around the mason jar and keep the roots warm.
